Canadian Masters Athlete of the Month – April 2024

Congratulations to both Cameron Levins and Dmitry Babenko for being selected as the Athlete of the Month for April, 2024!

Cameron Levins, age 35, raced to Canadian M35 records in both the 10k and half marathon in April; he has been named to the Canadian Olympic team and will be a contender in Paris in August.  On April 5th, his 28:11 time for the 10k in Paris, France in the Asics Festival of Running dropped the Canadian M35-39 record by 47 seconds. Cameron followed that on April 28th with a speedy 1:00:38 for the half marathon in the Golden Spike Istanbul Provincial Races (Altın Çivili İstanbul İl Yarışları), in Istanbul, Türkiye against a very stiff field. This time eclipsed the current Canadian M35 record of 1:04:57.  Cameron lives in Black Creek, BC and is coached by James Finlayson.

 

 

Dmitry Babenko, age 51, racewalked to an outstanding new Canadian record in the 5000m track event at the Penn Relays, Philadelphia, PA onApril 27th. His time of 22:54.92 broke a 35 year old M50 Canadian record established by the racewalking great, Jaan Roos.  This time currently ranks Dmitry as the best M50-54 5000m racewalker in the world in 2024. Dmitry lives in Brooklyn, NY, USA and is self-coached.

Congratulations to both Rachel Andres and Roslyn Smith for being selected as the Honorable Mentions for April, 2024!

Rachel Andres, 36, threw the discus 59.31m on April 6th in the OK Throws Series Meet #3 in Ramon, OK, USA. This throw broke the previous Canadian W35-39 record of 54.56m and places  her second in Canada in the Open rankings. Rachel lives in Olds, AB and is coached by Kim Cousins (Calgary, AB) and Chris Brown (Tulsa, OK). 

Roslyn Smith, 75, set a new W75-79 Canadian best time of 24:03 for the 5K in the Bazen Bay 5K in Sidney, BC on April 14th.  Her time eclipsed the previous W75 5K best time by more than 2 minutes! Roslyn lives in Comox, BC and is assisted by Wayne Crowe.
