Canadian Masters Athlete of the Month – August 2023

Congratulations to Myrtle Acton for winning Athlete of the Month (AOTM) for August, 2023!

Myrtle Acton, W90, broke world records an astonishing five times, set six Canadian records, and added an additional world leading performance, all in throws.  At the CMA Championships, Aug 11-13 in Langley, B.C., Myrtle set World Records in the discus throw with a throw of 15.28m, the shot put with 6.58m, and the hammer throw with 20.47m. She also set the W90 world record in the throws pentathlon, with 3975 points. She subsequently bettered her own world record in the discus throw with a 15.83m throw at the BC 55+ Games. Also in the BC 55+ Games in Abbotsford, BC, Myrtle set a Canadian record in the weight throw, with a 7.98m distance. Her world leading performance in 2023 was in javelin.

Honorable Mention

Additional excellent performances were selected for Honorable Mention from the many outstanding performances by Canadians in August.

The M60 4x800m relay team set a new world record of 9:16.90 at the CMA Championships, on Aug 12 in Langley, B.C. This speedy team consisted of Mark Pinckard (BC, 63), Chris Deighan (ON, 63), David Guss (BC, 62), and Greg Athayde (MB, 62). 

Christa Bortignon set the world record in W85 long jump with her 3.08m leap at the CMA Championships, on Aug 12 in Langley, BC. Subsequently she bettered that mark with her 3.11m at the BC 55+ Games in Abbotsford, BC. Also at the BC 55+ Games, Christa triple jumped 6.62m, which also exceeded the world record. Christa is ineligible for AOTM because she won it in July; athletes can only win it once per calendar year. 
Muriel Gieni demonstrated her athletic abilities in setting a world leading Canadian record in the W65 pentathlon, with her accumulation of 3990 points at the CMA Championships in Langley, BC. Also at the Langley meet Muriel’s triple jump of 8.87m set a Canadian record and is ranked second in the world in 2023.  She also set a Canadian record in the high jump with 1.31m.  Muriel is ineligible for AOTM because she won it in May; athletes can only win it once per calendar year.
