Canadian Masters Athlete of the Month – February 2023

Congratulations to Carol Lafayette-Boyd for winning Athlete of the Month for February, 2023!

Congratulations to Carol Lafayette-Boyd, 80 years young, for breaking three World Records on February 4th, 2023! Her new WRs are: 60m in 9.89s, 200m in 35.51s, and she triple jumped 7.66m. She also took nearly half a second off the W80-84 Canadian 50m record with her time of 8.61s, but there are no WRs kept for that distance. Due to her stellar performances, Carol was selected as the sole winner of CMA Athlete of the Month for February. Carol resides in Regina, Saskatchewan, and is coached by Chadon Dorsch.

 Honorable Mention

The AOTM committee struggled to select two additional performances from so many excellent ones, to award Honorable Mentions for February.

On February 24, Patty Szybunka, W65-69, set the Canadian 60m hurdle record with her time of 11.47s in the BC Masters Indoor Championships, which broke the record set in 2010 at the Kamloops WMA Indoor Championships by Betty Dargie.  Patty resides in North Vancouver and is coached in hurdles by Elena Voloshin.

Sasha Gollish, W40-44, on February 17th raced to a stellar time of 4:28.12 in the 1500m, which broke Erna Kozak’s 1987 record. On the same day, Sasha also raced to a 9:36.34 time in the 3000m. Both of Sasha’s 1500m and 3000m times set new Canadian records. Sasha lives in Toronto and is coached by Terry Radchenko.
