Canadian Masters Athlete of the Month – February 2024

Congratulations to both Elizabeth Waywell and Muriel Gieni for being selected as the Athletes of the Month (AOTM) for February, 2024!

Elizabeth Waywell, age 66, raced to a new Canadian W65-69 road race best of 1:33:34 for the half marathon in the “First Half” in Vancouver, BC on February 11, 2024. This time was 2.5 minutes faster than the previous Canadian best. Her standing in World Rankings was only bettered by the former international star marathoner, Rosa Mota.

Elizabeth resides in Guelph, Ontario and is coached by John Marsden.

Muriel Gieni, also 66, earned3852 points in the Indoor Pentathlon on her way to a massively improved Canadian Record at the Alberta Indoor Games in Edmonton, AB on February 4, 2024.           

Her results for the events were as follows: 60mH (10.72s), HJ (1.30m), SP (8.87m), LJ (3.82m), and 800m (3:52.49). Muriel finished the indoor season ranked #2 in the World!

Congratulations to both Yannick Le Mouël and Wendy Alexis for being selected as the Honorable Mentions for February, 2024!

Yannick Le Mouël, 56, completed the indoor season ranked #1 in the world in the 60m hurdles in the M55-59 division, based on his 8.89s time at the CMA Championships in Montreal on February 17th. While he did not quite break his 2023 Canadian Record, few men 55-59 have ever gone faster in the 60m hurdles. Yannick resides in Saint Jean sur Richelieu, QC and is coached by Luc Lafrance.

Wendy Alexis, age 68, powered to an 8.92s 60m at the Ontario Masters Championships in Toronto on February 25. This was the third fastest W65-69 time over 60m in the world in the last 10 years, and just slightly behind Karla Del Grande’s Canadian record set in 2020. Wendy lives in Ottawa where she is coached by Sean Burges.
