Canadian Masters Athlete of the Month – January 2024

Congratulations to both Roslyn Smith and Maria Zambrano for being selected as Athletes of the Month (AOTM) for January 2024!

Maria Zambrano, age 53, raced to an outstanding time of 2:44:37 on January 14, 2024, in the Chevron Houston Marathon, Texas. This broke her own W50 Canadian road race best time in the marathon and ranked Maria as the likely all time #2 W50-54 in the marathon. Maria resides in Calgary and is coached by Bryan Emslie. On route to setting this marathon best time, she also set Canadian road race bests times in the 30 km (1:56:41), and the 20 mile (2:16:11) distances.

 

Roslyn Smith, age 75, set the Canadian W75-79 10 km Canadian road race best in the Cobble Hill 10K and BC 10K Championships, on Vancouver Island on January 28, 2024, with her astonishing Canadian best time of 49:11. Roslyn resides in Comox, BC where she is coached by Wayne Crowe. This 10 km time was also faster that the 10 km road best times for W75 runners in both the UK and the USA!
Two weeks prior to her blazing 10 km race, on January 14, Roslyn Smith also lowered the Canadian W75 8 km road best time with her 39:05 finish in the Harriers Pioneer 8K in North Saanich, BC.

Mélanie Guy, age 45, threw 13.72m in the Weight Throw at the Ottawa Winter Classic, on January 20, 2024, for a W45-49 Canadian record. omen 45-49 years throw the 20lb (9.08kg) implement. Mélanie’s throw ranks her first in World Masters Rankings for indoor Weight Throw in 2024 and is a new Indoor Canadian record. Mélanie resides in Belœil, QC and is coached by David Delombaerde.

Muriel Gieni, age 65, raced to a new W65-69 Canadian record of 10.63s in the 60m Hurdles on Jan 12, 2024, at the Sanderson Track Classic in Saskatoon, SK. This time placed her second in World Rankings for the indoor season, just slightly behind UK’s World Record holder, Jane Horder. Muriel resides in Saskatoon and is coached by Chris Schneider.

Kristen Dajia, age 60, threw 14.75m in the Weight Throw at the Athletics Ontario Mini Meet 2, in Toronto on Jan 28, 2024, for a huge indoor Canadian W60-64 record. Women in the 60-64 division throw the 12lb (5.45kg) implement. The previous record of 12.03m had stood since 2009! This throw ranked Kristen second in World Indoor Rankings for 2024! Kristen lives in Aurora, ON and is self-coached and part of a group at Throwers Club that helps each other.
