CMA Announces the Athletes Of The Year

Canadian Masters Athletics announced the winners of the 2011 Athletes of the Year.

Male Field Events
M70 Marak Glowacki BC

Marek set a Canadian Indoor record in the shot put, and Canadian Outdoor records in the shot put, the discus throw and the Throws Pentathlon. These included a Gold in the shot, 4th in the hammer and the Throws Pentathlon, and 6th in the discus, at the WMA Championships in Sacramento.

Female Running / Racewalking
W75 Helly Visser AB

Helly won Golds in the 800 and the 1500 in the WMA Championships in Sacramento. During the year, she set Canadian records Indoors in the 1500 m and the Mile, and Outdoors in the Mile, and World records in both the Indoor and the Outdoor Mile.

Male – Running / Racewalking
M80 Ed Whitlock ON

Ed set World records in the 1500 and 3000 Indoors and the 1500, 5000, 10000 and the Marathon Outdoors, in some cases twice during the year. In doing so, he won two Golds each in the Ontario Indoors and Outdoors, the CMA Indoors and Outdoors, and 4 Golds in the WMA Outdoors. He was the nominee from NCCWMA for the World Male Masters Athlete of the year.

Female – Field Events
W70 Christa Bortignon BC

Christa set Canadian records in the Triple Jump (Gold medal), the Long Jump (Bronze medal) and the Heptathlon (Silver medal), in the WMA Championships in Sacramento. At other meets, she later bettered several of those records, and also set Canadian records in the Outdoor Pentathlon, and in the Indoor Pentathlon, Long Jump and the Triple Jump. In addition, several Indoor and Outdoor Canadian records were set in running events, including the hurdles.
