Racewalking Seminar – Tuesday July 13 – 7 p.m. EST
Target Audience: Current racewalkers and those interested in trying a different event that is similar to distance running yet more demanding and simultaneously gentler on the body.
Main Topics: What is racewalking and why should I care? Also, what makes it so interesting and, yes, exciting!
Racewalking, described by their own as “running with rules,” is an atypical form of motion consisting of a straightened knee, “constant” foot-to-ground contact and that characteristic hip wiggle. It’s widely applicable regardless of age or athletic ability! If you are looking to diversify or adapt your training to maintain intensity while reducing significant wear and tear on the joints, racewalking may be your golden ticket! Join us as we unravel this unique yet highly specific discipline, highlighting the essential technique and conditioning.
Presenters of this seminar:
Dave Keenan, Level 2 NCCP Coach, has coached all age groups in Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton area for 18 years. He was originally coached by Holly Gerke and mentored by some great coaches, such as Stafford Whalen, Roger Burrows and Gerry Dragomir. A former runner, he was a silver medallist in the 10 km Walk at the 2005 World Masters Games in Edmonton is still actively competing. He is also a Level 3 Athletics Canada Starter Assistant and a World Athletics Course Measurer, Grade C.
Johanna Flipsen is a lifelong athlete who has competed nationally as a Masters athlete in synchronized skating, power lifting, and road running, as well as dabbling in triathlon! Johanna has been racewalking since 2009, and has competed in three WMA world championships, earning medals at each including gold. She currently holds 23 CMA Canadian racewalk records. Johanna currently competes in the W65-69 age group.
Samantha Warawa (née Kuchera) is a Level 2 NCCP Coach-Endurance (trained). She is currently a recreational runner with background in both coaching and competing local and provincially. She’s an active volunteer and executive committee member of Rivervalley Parkrun (Edmonton). She started racewalking in March 2021 under the mentorship of Dave Keenan to diversify her coaching skills and experience, and is now a racewalking convert and novice coach in the discipline, with no intention of turning back! Her goals are to inspire, develop, and foster positive experiences for the life-long athlete.
